This is a set of 3 Orcs, the archetypal low-level tribal monster of the AD&D game. The figures were sold in packs of 3, containing a swordsman, a crossbowman and a figure wielding a battle-axe. It is unclear how many variants were made of each pose, but a Citadel mail order flyer of June 1986 seems to suggest a release of 7 swordsmen, 5 crossbowmen and 5 axemen (although some of the figure variants pictured on this flyer seem to have been photographed twice!).
Pose 1, variant A. This is the battle-axe wielding pose. He wears a studded leather jerkin, with the only variant details being in the facial features and headgear. This one has a closed mouth with protruding lower fangs, and he wears a plain steel skullcap with a nasal guard
Pose 1, variant B. This variant has an open mouth with protruding tongue and sharp fangs, and he wears a cross-banded steel skullcap with a small spike on the top.
Pose 1, variant C. This variant has a closed mouth with protruding lower fangs. He is bare-headed and has a large ring in his left ear.
Pose 1, variant D. This one has a partly-open mouth with a protruding tongue hanging out to the left, and he wears a plain conical steel skullcap.
Pose 1, variant E. This one has a closed mouth with pronounced undershot lower jaw, and he wears a felt cap with long earflaps.
Pose 2, variant A. This is the sword wielding pose. He wears a tattered chainmail shirt and carries a curved scimitar in his right hand, with the only variant details being in the facial features and headgear. This one has a closed mouth with small protruding lower fangs, and he wears a plain steel skullcap with a single reinforcing band and small rivets.
Pose 2, variant B. This one has a wide-open mouth showing fangs and a long tongue. He has very large pointed ears and wears a spiked steel skullcap with a single reinforcing band and a short nasal guard.
Pose 2, variant C. This one has a closed mouth with large protruding lower fangs, and he is bare-headed with long pointed ears.
Pose 2, variant D. This variant has an open showing sharp lower fangs, and he wears a battered conical steel skullcap with a single reinforcing band, a short nasal guard and small rivets.
Pose 2, variant E. This one has a closed mouth with 4 protruding lower fangs and with the tip ofhis tongue showing. He wears a pointed felt cap with long earflaps.
Pose 2, variant F. This is possibly a missing variant, although it may be the same as Pose 2, Variant D. Please contact me if you have one to sell or trade (or can supply an image).
Pose 3, variant A. This is the crossbow-armed pose. He wears a fur waistcoat and a shirt with scalloped sleeves and hem, and wears a hand-axe and a quarrel of bolts at his belt. Again, the only variant details are in the facial features and headgear. This one has a closed mouth with small protruding lower fangs, and he wears a pointed felt cap with long earflaps.
Pose 3, variant B. This one has a closed mouth with small protruding lower fangs, and he wears a cross-banded steel skullcap with large rivets.
Pose 3, variant C. This one has a closed mouth with no visible fangs, and he wears a shaped steel helmet with rivets in the lower edge.
Pose 3, variant D. This one has a wide-open mouth showing sharp fangs and a long tongue hanging out to the right. He wears a felt cap with long earflaps and three large protruding spikes.
Pose 3, variant E. This is an unknown variant. Please contact me if you have one to sell or trade (or can supply an image).
